Innocence Remains
I wrote this when very much in love, knowing that while
there were no guarantees of anything, I did still believe that true love could last
forever. It is also an attempt to capture the magic and innocence of fantasy
that I believe always remains with us.
There used to be a bogeyman that lived beneath my bed
And toys which came to life while I was sleeping;
The bears around the corner kept me treading on the squares
And monsters lurked in every darkened room
Childhood shadows fade and die,
While disillusion grows
And innocence like sand just drifts away.
But I still believe in fairy tales,
Love that lasts forever,
Magic that can last a lifetime long.
I believe in every wounded heart
Some innocence remains,
And I still believe in happy ever after.
Now the knight in shining armour lives only in my dreams
No monsters stalk abroad for him to vanquish
And unicorns and elves and dwarves roam the forests of the
night
And are never seen in daylight anymore.
Childhood heroes fade and die,
While disillusion grows
And innocence like sand just drifts away.
But I still believe in fairy tales,
Love that lasts forever,
Magic that can last a lifetime long.
I believe in every wounded heart
Some innocence remains,
And I still believe in happy ever after.
I know there’s no Prince Charming gonna ride into my life,
Sweep me off my feet and far away.
My heart is far too earthbound for castles in the clouds;
My feet too firmly stuck on solid ground.
But I still believe in fairy tales,
Love that lasts forever,
Magic that can last a lifetime long.
I believe in every wounded heart
Some innocence remains,
And I still believe in happy ever after.
